High Turnover Strikes Meta’s Llama Team as 78% of Original Researchers Depart
Meta’s flagship open-source AI project, Llama, faces a significant brain drain as 78% of its original research team has exited. Only three of the fourteen authors behind the seminal 2023 Llama paper remain—Hugo Touvron, Xavier Martinet, and Faisal Azhar. The exodus leaves Meta’s ambitious AI initiative without much of its founding talent.
Most departing researchers have joined or founded competing ventures. Paris-based Mistral AI, co-founded by former Meta engineers Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, has emerged as a primary destination. The startup is actively developing open-source models that directly challenge Meta’s offerings, leveraging the expertise of multiple Llama alumni.
